Summary of Graduation Requirements for Awarding the Medical Degree (MD) at Georgetown University
Students must achieve satisfactory academic progress for promotion to each successive phase/term of the established four-year curriculum. Satisfactory academic progress is defined as passing performance in all coursework and in all academic experiences recorded on the transcript, including successful completion of all posted external requirements towards degree completion, within each term therein.
Of note, students may not begin any portion of the subsequent level of the four-year curriculum until they have successfully completed all required components of the established curriculum up to that point in full.
Successful completion or passing grade requires satisfactory academic/clinical performance AND satisfactory interpersonal communications and professionalism. Requirements for promotion may be achieved with remediation.
Fulfillment of GUSOM technical and professionalism standards requires meeting and maintaining the following standards:
- Technical standards in each of five areas as detailed under Academic Policies in the Student Handbook:
- Observation abilities
- Communication abilities
- Motor abilities
- Intellectual-conceptual, integrative, and quantitative abilities
- Social and behavioral attributes
- Professionalism standards as detailed in the Student Code of Professionalism in the Student Handbook.
