Student Clubs

We have many clubs which provide a range of social, spiritual, civic and intellectual events on campus and throughout the community in DC. We also welcome any new ideas for clubs that people wish to start.

All programs and activities are open to all Georgetown University School of Medicine students regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or any other characteristic protected under University policy or applicable law.

Acute Neurological Illness

The mission of our club is to provide support to patients who were diagnosed with an acute neurological illness. As these diagnoses are both challenging and stressful for both patients and their family, we hope to provide different meditative activities and resources to help them deal with their neurological illnesses and facilitate in their healing process. The resources include physical exercise, art therapy, music therapy, journaling, reflective reading, deep breathing exercises and meditation to help in their recovery.

American Medical Association

AMA provides strength to physician, resident, and medical student voices in matters of legislation and in courts across the nation. The organization aims to correct long standing issues within medicine to create a more equitable future.

Anesthesia Interest Group

We provide guidance and opportunities to students interested in choosing a career in anesthesiology. We also put on events so student can learn more about what anesthesia is and what a career in it looks like.

Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)

One part of our mission is to bring together Asians, Pacific Islanders and others interested in the health issues that affect Asians and Pacific Islanders so that we may have a strong, collective, public and political voice. APAMSA provides an important forum for APIA medical students to meet, exchange information and experiences and develop personally and professionally.

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM)

The AI in Medicine Club is a community of enthusiasts and professionals who explore the integration of artificial intelligence in the medical field, fostering collaboration, research, and innovation to enhance healthcare diagnostics, treatment, and patient care. Our activities have included discussions and workshops that promote the ethical use of AI technology in medicine.

Be The Match Advocacy Club

Providing meaningful, unique opportunities for students to learn about blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases treated by a marrow transplant. Increasing awareness of the need for young, committed, racially and ethnically diverse registry members who can save a life. Holding campus-wide marrow education/awareness events, donor registry and fundraising events and activities to give the entire student body the opportunity to join in this social movement and global effort.

Big Hoya Little Saxa

Bioethics Club

Our mission is to supplement the bioethics in the GUSOM curriculum by inviting outside speakers to talk about their ethical challenges in clinical practice. We believe that continuing to have discussions regarding the grey area between right and wrong in clinical decision making will prepare GUSOM students for a career as an ethical physician, doing what is best for our future patients.

Black Men in White Coats

Black Men In White Coats seeks to increase the number of Black Men In The Field of Medicine by exposure, inspiration, and mentoring. To accomplish this, we are partnering with various medical schools across the country to produce outstanding short documentary videos which bring awareness to this issue that not only affects the Black male population, but also the nation as a whole.

Chess Club

The individual benefits of playing chess are innumerable. On top of that, chess offers an incredible opportunity to connect with the person across the board. This club will provide opportunities for students to explore and learn the game of chess, connect with classmates and patients, and to learn lessons about themselves and others through the game. The beauty of chess is it can be whatever you want it to be. It is a game of endless possibilities. It satisfies the soul, and challenges the mind. It transcends language, age, race, religion, politics, gender, and socioeconomic background. Whatever your circumstances, anyone can enjoy a good battle over the chess board.

Climate Health and Medical Sustainability (CHMS)

Our commitment extends to educating and empowering future physicians in recognizing and mitigating the many health implications resulting from climate change and environmentally unjust structures and systems. We strive to equip future physicians with the expertise and tools to effectively convey this knowledge thereby empowering the communities and patients they will serve. Through purposeful student activism, our goal is to lead and support sustainability initiatives within medicine, fostering a resilient and environmentally conscious community.

Community SKINterventions, Georgetown Chapter

Community SKINterventions (CS) is dedicated to providing culturally relevant dermatologic education to under-resourced communities in the greater Washington, DC, area.

Correctional Health Outreach (CHO)

Correctional Health Outreach (CHO) is a team of volunteers founded by Georgetown medical students with two purposes: one, to study and build awareness about the health disparities that may be affecting the incarcerated population, and two, to facilitate professional relationships with incarcerated persons and corrections facilities through outreach and education.

Cura Chefs: Culinary Medicine & Community

The mission of this club is to incorporate nutritional education into the medical experience from both a provider and physician standpoint, utilize cooking as a healthy activity and avenue to destress, and facilitate student body relationships at GUSOM and with local communities in the surrounding neighborhoods. surrounding culinary medicine. As the Culinary Medicine selective is already highly popular among Georgetown students, this club would offer a longitudinal opportunity to continue working at the intersection of community, medicine, and medicine. The primary way Culinary Medicine & Community would be facilitated would be through weekly or bi-weekly virtual cooking classes led by students. These cooking classes can further integrate health education and discussion towards solving the problems in food access and barriers to healthy lifestyles for students and patients alike. This would also be a great opportunity to incorporate stronger Georgetown participation at Medstar and expand on existing programs. Another goal of this club would be to eventually be able to provide patients experiencing terminal illnesses or lifelong diseases that have challenges accessing and face barriers to getting the nutrition they need through a weekly program or service days.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontiéres (MSF) Student Chapter

MSF is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters. The MSF: GUSOM Chapter aims to empower students to gain a better understanding of these medical and humanitarian issues from experts in the field, to learn medical skills necessary for field work, and to support MSF’s advocacy campaigns in DC.

Food Is Medicine

The mission of Food is Medicine is to gain an understanding of the local, national, global, and historical conditions that affect food security as well as its effects on individuals and our healthcare system. Our goal is to discover how we, as Georgetown University medical students, can positively impact community health in order to prevent, manage, and treat illnesses among our population. We will do so by prioritizing nutrition education, working with local organizations, and uncovering extant food-related barriers in the DMV area.

Georgetown Cardiovascular Research Club (GCRC)

The mission of this club is to connect students with opportunities for cardiovascular research and foster interest in the many medical careers related to cardiovascular health. We will fulfill our mission through mentorship, hands-on experience, and educational initiatives. Our aim is to contribute to advancements in cardiovascular medicine while nurturing the next generation of leaders in the field.

Georgetown Global Surgery Student Alliance

The Global Surgery Student Alliance (GSSA) is a national student-run global surgery organization that is affiliated with the International Student Surgical Network (InciSioN) and has chapters at over 40 medical schools across the U.S. We hope to start the Georgetown chapter of the Global Surgery Student Alliance with the mission to educate, inspire, and unite students through engagement and mentorship in global surgery. Our focus will be on creating awareness of global surgical disparities and advocating for increased access to safe and affordable surgical care for people in resource-limited settings. We will aim to educate students about sustainable surgical interventions and also connect Georgetown students with mentors as well as medical students at other institutions who share the same goal.

Georgetown Med Social Running Club (GSRC)

GSRC a club designed to make running less intimidating! We are four girls who fell in love with running during medical school, and want to encourage inclusivity in the sport through frequent casual running events. We accept runners of all abilities (especially new runners) and will invite members to run with us, explore DC on foot, and celebrate our small victories afterwards at a restaurant/happy hour/home to foster a community.

Georgetown Medical Illustration

Georgetown Medical Illustration (GMI) aims to produce medical illustrations that engage, educate, and empower in the healthcare setting whether through official academic posters/publications, children’s books, or get-well cards. Historically, the majority of academic journals depict White patients, GMI hopes to illustrate change and promote more diverse patient representation. For medical students, GMI is also an opportunity to gain a more meaningful experience with learning anatomy/dissection while cultivating anatomy drawing skills.

Georgetown Street Medicine Outreach

Georgetown Street Medicine Outreach (GSMO) is a student-run organization that reaches out to people affected by homelessness. Students conduct street rounds, providing point-of-care testing, socks, hygiene items, clothing, and information regarding local resources.

Georgetown University Bike Club (aka “The Krebs Cyclers”)

The Georgetown Bike club aims to give students both a physical and social outlet throughout the everyday rigors of medical school as well as an opportunity to engage with the GUMC and greater DC community in philanthropic efforts. Our bike rides are intended to bring members of all skill levels together. Although we encourage everyone to go at their own pace, we always start and end our rides together at a common location, often sharing food and drinks to prioritize Hoya camaraderie. Once established, we hope to expand our philanthropic potential to the GUMC (i.e., the upcoming BellRinger race to support research at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in the fall) as well as the greater DC community in service efforts.

Georgetown Wilderness Medicine Group

The Georgetown SOM Wilderness Medicine Group was established with the help of Dr. Matthew Wilson to teach GU students the basics of wilderness medicine. Through practical workshops and virtual seminars, GU students and experienced professionals will teach club members wilderness medicine topics such as dive medicine, water rescue, snow rescue, mountain rescue, alpine rescue, and other wilderness medicine related topics.

Giving A Boost (GAB)

Giving A Boost (GAB) is a nationwide organization aimed at supporting medical school applicants in the local region who might not have access to mentors or quality pre-med advising at their undergraduate institutions. GAB functions as an application support service, and our mentors provide primary and secondary application support and interview prep for the medical school applicant mentees. We understand that applicants who do not attend DMV universities with associated medical schools, such as Georgetown, Howard, or GWU, often lack the direct support of medical students familiar with the application cycle as they work through their applications. Our goal is simply to help these underserved applicants around the DC region be successful and knowledgeable advocates for themselves as they experience the application process.

At AMSA, we see a better way forward– we see opportunities to reshape medicine as future physicians. To build a diverse and inclusive community of golf enthusiasts with a balanced mix of advanced and beginner players. To create an environment where students, faculty, physicians, and alumni may come together to practice, learn, and teach golf as desired and build relationships while being active and outside. To build a lifelong hobby (and friendships and opportunities) for our fellow classmates in an environment that is welcoming to all skill levels.

GUSOM’s Women of Color Collective (WOCC)

GUSOM’s Women of Color Collective (WOCC) aims to foster an inclusive community that supports women of color throughout their medical education and training. We hope that this collective serves as a built-in-space where members can learn from each other’s intersectional identities and life experiences in addition to celebrating the collective’s diverse cultural backgrounds and traditions. Our goal is to also be a space for open dialogue on issues affecting women of color on a domestic and international level.

H2AI (Healthcare Hackathon with AI)

Healthcare Hackathon with AI (H2AI) is dedicated to integrating AI into healthcare, offering students opportunities to learn and develop new skills through workshops, a 36-hour hackathon, and interaction with industry partners. Bringing together hundreds of clinicians, engineers, and students from the DMV area, we foster innovation in AI and medicine by encouraging collaboration among experts in computer science, medicine, and business. Our event also serves as a networking platform, linking participants with professionals ranging from the biotech industry to regulatory agencies. Our goal is to utilize readily available foundation AI models to create early prototypes aimed at reducing physician burnout, enhancing patient care, and improving clinical outcomes.

HOYA Clinic is a student-run clinic where we aim to educate students about the socioeconomic inequalities that manifest themselves as health disparities. Ultimately, we hope to empower patients with the knowledge to improve their own health and enhance their well-being while simultaneously learning from our diverse and resilient community.

Hoya DOPE Project (Drug Overdose Prevention and Education)

The Hoya DOPE Project aims to combat the opioid epidemic by increasing naloxone distribution and education in DC. We provide education sessions and free naloxone at various sites throughout the city where we educate members of the community about how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to administer the opioid-reversal drug, naloxone.

Hoya Med Caregivers

This club is dedicated to the emotional, social and educational support of medical students who also serve as primary caregivers, including but not limited to caregivers of children, elderly, and siblings. Hoya Med Caregivers strives to promote a space for family enrichment, well-being, and community among medical student caregivers in order to help them cope and thrive during their medical school journey.

Hoya Medical Pride Alliance

Created to foster a safe space for students of the LGBTQ+ community and advocate for their advancement on and off-campus.

We provide a peer-to-peer platform for senior students to share their clinical skills and experiences with more junior students. Senior students serve as educators, while junior students have the opportunity to practice their clinical skills in a constructive environment with growth-minded feedback and without the pressure of academic grading.

We are Georgetown medical students running a free tutoring service for underprivileged K-12 students in the DC area. As aspiring physicians, we recognize the role we play in our communities and aspire to foster a spirit of continual growth and learning in our youth. Humans of GUSOM

Humans of GUSOM allows the community to take a glance into each other’s lives and learn more about momentous snippets that have shaped us into who we are. This photoblog platform strives to build closer connections by showcasing the diversity of identities within and outside of medicine through personal stories shared by the GUSOM community. The inspiration for our club stems from the famous photo blog of “Humans of New York.”

Machine Learning in Medicine

We invite various speakers who can explain the interface between machine learning (e.g., retinal imaging in diabetics) and a specific specialty (e.g., ophthalmology). We are most interested in appreciating the clinical applications of machine-learning that we may likely encounter during our careers. We hope the knowledge we will gain together as a club will make us better physicians when we practice medicine across all specialties over the next few decades.

Military Medicine Interest Group (MMIG)

A group for HPSP students and those interested in military medicine to gain exposure to the unique aspects of military medicine. We will work in conjunction with local HPSP programs, USUHS, and WRNNMC to coordinate events and guest speakers to discuss their experiences in military medicine.

We are a student specialty interest group focused on promoting research and dedication to the field of oncology. We host an event once a semester that includes faculty lectures and lunches, charity events, and research opportunities- our current membership is up to 20 people.

Operation Smile

Operation Smile’s mission is to use its expertise in treating cleft lip and cleft palate to create solutions that deliver safe surgery to people where it’s needed most. Our GUSOM chapter is committed to supporting Operation Smile and its goals through fundraising, education, and advocacy.

Ophthalmology Interest Group

To assist students in learning more about ophthalmology, help them find research opportunities, train them on basic ophthalmic pathology/physical exam skills, prepare them to perform well on ophthalmology rotations, and prepare to apply for ophthalmology residency

Pediatrics Interest Group

We aim to give students extra exposure to the field of pediatrics by giving them the opportunity to engage with children in both a clinical and non-clinical setting, as well as hear from pediatric experts on various topics relevant to the specialty. We hope to spur more interest in the field of pediatrics and support students who wish to pursue a medical career in this primary care specialty.

Project Stitches

Knitting, crocheting, crafting for kids! Our club mission is to encourage medical student well-being, acquisition of new skills, and community work! We organize knitting and crocheting events to bring together medical students and give them time for their hobbies outside of their busy schedules. We teach new crafting skills for all those interested in learning! We also incorporate the teaching of surgical knot-tying and other hands-on surgical skills to our craft workshops. All crafting products will be donated to local children’s hospitals or DC organizations to benefit children and families battling chronic illnesses, expecting long-term hospital stays, or experiencing homelessness.

The Medical School Radiology Interest Group is a student-led organization within medical schools that aims to foster interest and understanding in the field of radiology. Rural Medicine Interest Group

In line with the Georgetown University School of Medicine’s mission of providing exceptional care to underserved populations, the goal of the Rural Medicine Interest Group is to increase interest in providing care for rural populations. The club works to expose students to rural medicine so they can better understand the environment and determine if they would enjoy working in these areas. This organization is not specialty specific and welcome to all.

Our club’s mission is to increase South Asian representation on campus. GUSOM has many students identifying as from South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan), and there currently is not a student group for us to celebrate our culture and heritage. Surgery Interest Group (SIG)

The Surgery Interest Group (SIG) is a club for students who are interested in pursuing a career in surgery. As a member of SIG, there are opportunities to shadow physicians in the operating room through our Surgery Shadowing Program, get involved in research, practice knot-tying/suturing, attend surgical case presentations within different surgical specialties through our Surgical Spotlight Series, and learn more about the wonderful world of surgery through a variety of different resources we provide in our newsletter.

Teen Promise Project

We are an organization run by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology that provides sex education to middle school students in the DC area. Our members teach at two local schools, and GW and Howard medical students teach at other schools in the city. We cover topics such as reproductive anatomy, puberty, STIs, protection, sexuality, gender, etc.

The Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Club

Our mission is to advocate for well-being in medical school by raising awareness of issues related to burnout and mental health care, providing education surrounding these issues, and advancing solutions for change. The Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation believes that addressing the mental health needs and well-being of medical trainees early on in their careers is critical to achieving and maintaining a culture of well-being and career satisfaction in the medical field. Our goal is to equip medical students and physicians with the resources, support, and knowledge to develop strong coping strategies and create a support system for themselves so that they may utilize these practices throughout their career in medicine. We also aim to advocate for policy efforts to reduce burnout and improve access to mental health care in Washington, DC, and surrounding states.

Ultrasound Club aims to provide students with hands-on experience and training in ultrasound techniques, enhancing their skills in diagnostic imaging. Ultimately, the Ultrasound Club strives to promote the integration of ultrasound technology into medical education, preparing future healthcare professionals with a valuable tool for clinical practice and patient care.
