2025 HOYA Clinic Summer Sports Camp

(August 20, 2025) — A friendly soccer match, swimming, arts, crafts, bubble blowing and other giggle-worthy activities highlighted the 12th annual HOYA Clinic Summer Sports Camp. A record number of children whose families are experiencing homelessness participated in the camp, hosted by Georgetown University School of Medicine’s HOYA Clinic.

“My favorite part of Summer Sports Camp was seeing it come to fruition,” said Neha Rana (M’28), who leads community relations for the HOYA Clinic. “Aliza [Haider], Franny [Bengtson], my HOYA Clinic co-coordinators and I spent the entire summer planning for this camp. Seeing the bright smiles on the faces of 18 children experiencing houselessness made it all worth it.”

Second-year medical students planned the Aug. 9 and 10 camp in partnership with staff at The Triumph, a short-term housing facility in Ward 8. Throughout the year, the HOYA Clinic provides medical care without charge to families staying at The Triumph and the Catholic Charities Volunteer Medical Clinic.

First-year medical student Michael Nirula (M’29) was among the 55 students who either planned and/or volunteered at the camp held at the Anacostia Pool and Recreation Center. Nirula said the weekend reminded him of the summers of his youth.

“I liked simply helping kids get their recreation and exercise in during the summer,” he said. “It was a meaningful part of my summers growing up, and it’s especially important in D.C.’s urban setting. My favorite day was sports camp, when I was running around with a boy who made me realize I need to work on my own cardio.”
