Graduating Medical Students Honored at Annual Warwick Evans Ceremony

(May 17, 2026) — School of Medicine faculty honored outstanding graduating medical students for excellence in various specialties, research, patient care, academic achievement, student leadership, advocacy and commitment to social justice, and community service during the Warwick Evans Awards Ceremony.

The annual event, named in honor of the first Georgetown medical school graduate, was held May 15 in Gaston Hall.

School of Medicine Executive Dean Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, welcomed family and friends to the student awards ceremony.

The School of Medicine’s Executive Dean, Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, welcomed the Class of 2026 along with their family, friends, faculty and staff, noting that the Warwick Evans Awards recognize students who excelled beyond the “grueling work” of medical school.

“We get to celebrate excellence in research, in education and in service,” he said. “And so to you, our awardees, we say: you are destined to be difference-makers in a world that needs better and where people deserve change.

“You helped those around you excel,” he added. “Because that’s how we make a difference. It’s not just what you can do as an individual, but how you help those around you be their best.”

Student Reflection

The Class of 2026 chose Arjun Mathur (NHS‘22, M’26) to deliver the student address at the ceremony. He focused his remarks on a triad: authenticity to ourselves, authenticity to our individual missions, and authenticity to each other.

Arjun Mathur (NHS‘22, M’26) delivered the student address at this year’s ceremony.

Mathur emphasized that their success was a collective achievement. “Surviving medical school takes a community, and without the support of our families, loved ones, friends, teachers, mentors and many others, our success would not be possible,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of diversity in identity and perspectives in their formation.

“As Georgetown invites us to be, we truly are a community in diversity, united in our calling to serve as healers,” Mathur remarked.

Mathur encouraged his peers to maintain the same drive that brought them through the challenges of national board exams and the residency application process. “Let us approach our next chapter with the same enthusiasm and authenticity with which we close this one,” he urged.

He concluded by sharing a poignant reminder of the agency they now hold as physicians, quoting renowned surgeon and author Atul Gawande: “‘You may not control life’s circumstances, but getting to be the author of your life means getting to control what you do with them.’”

During the ceremony, Mathur was recognized with three awards: the Georgetown Clinical Society Award, the Student Mentorship Award and the William P. Argy, MD Teaching Award.
