What is Biomedical and Health Informatics?
Biomedical and Health informatics applies to computer and information science to the advancement of life sciences research, health professions education, public health, and patient care. This multidisciplinary and integrative field focuses on health information and communication technologies (HICT), and involves the computer, cognitive, and social sciences.
Georgetown School of Medicine Informatics works to:
- Develop and integrate clinical informatics into the School of Medicine curriculum
- Identify needs and develop informatics solutions for the School of Medicine administrative functions
- Support student driven informatics initiatives
- Serve as liaison for the School of Medicine for collaborative informatics projects

Handheld Computing Requirements
The School of Medicine requires students to be competent in using a smartphone and/or other handheld devices at the point of care to answer clinical questions and for clinical decision support. Mobile medical applications and handheld computing skills are taught in several of the courses in the Journeys curriculum. Students are expected to use the devices, especially smartphones, also in their everyday clinical duties and on all rotations.
The School of Medicine requires students to own and use a personal IOS or Android smartphone from the start of the program and keep them updated as necessary.

Student Access to Hospital Information Systems
Georgetown medical students access affiliate hospital computer networks and clinical information systems (CIS) as part of their clinical duties. Our clinical health systems partner, MedStar Health, including MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, will provision credentials to medical students for their required clinical experiences. Network access includes the ability to login and utilizes computers on the MedStar Health network and wireless internet access in the hospital.
MedStar Health uses several clinical information systems (CIS):
- MedConnect (Cerner): Inpatient and Outpatient EMR (with exception to Lombardi Hem/Onc Outpatient clinics and Perigen in L&D for inpatient)
- Amalga: Print forms including inpatient consents and some inpatient order sets
- McKesson MRDI (HPF Webstation): Scanned inpatient provider and intro documentation prior to December 2016.
- ARIA: Hemo/Onc outpatient electronic medical record
- MedStar Associate wifi: Join the MedStar Associate wifi to register up to three devices (GUSOM students and providers only). The link works only on MedStar Network.
- Perigyn/Peribirth: Inpatient OBGYN EMR. Provisioned at time of rotation.
- Dragon: Dictation via microphone into MedConnect text fields. Access must be requested via GUSOM.
UserID, passwords and access codes will be distributed to students via one45.
